A24 releases the first trailer for director Alex Garland’s latest horror-thriller effort, Men, which stars Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear.

The first trailer for director Alex Garland’s new horror-thriller Men, starring Jessie Buckley, has arrived. Garland began his career as a novelist, writing The Beach, which would later be adapted by director Danny Boyle and star Leonardo DiCaprio. Garland then wrote two more projects for Boyle to direct, the zombie-thriller 28 Days Later and the sci-fi thriller Sunshine with Chris Evans and Cillian Murphy. The filmmaker then moved behind the camera to write and ghost-direct the comic-book adaptation of Dredd starring Karl Urban.

Garland extended his directing portfolio further in 2014 with Ex Machina, starring Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander, and then the Natalie Portman led sci-fi film Annihilation. The director then stepped into the realm of TV with the FX series Devs, starring Sonoya Mizuno and Nick Offerman. Garland now has a number of projects in the works, including a film called Civil War with Kirsten Dunst, as well as a feature adaptation script for the video game series Halo (although the status of this is unclear, given the live-action Halo series is set to debut on Paramount+ this year).

Now, the first trailer for Garland’s latest feature directorial effort, Men, has been revealed by A24. Men stars Oscar-nominated actress Buckley (The Lost Daughter) as a “woman going on vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband,” with some haunting ramifications. The film also stars No Time to Die‘s Rory Kinnear, and appears to be right in line with Garland’s eerie but beautiful cinematic style and sensibilities, not to mention the smooth, clean aesthetics and haunting appeal of his prior films. Garland’s cinematographer, Rob Hardy, has called the film “…something truly extraordinary, and reassuringly weird.” Check out the Men trailer and poster below.

While Buckley was recently nominated for an Oscar for her work in The Lost Daughter, she is also well known for other works, such as FX’s Fargo, Dolittle with Robert Downey Jr., Judy with Renée Zellweger, and the HBO mini-series Chernobyl. The actress made her biggest splash with the musical drama Wild Rose, about a Scottish woman becoming a Nashville country star. Kinnear is best known as Tanner in the James Bond franchise, as well as for his roles in Penny Dreadful, The Intimidation Game, and the mini-series Southcliffe.

Garland has been making smart, trippy, and haunting sci-fi/horror related material for years now, and has established a unique style of eerie, slow-burn storytelling that’s both energetic and hypnotic at once. The director goes the extra mile in creating complex characters for the horrific and otherworldly situations they’re put in, making his work stand out in a more refined way. It’s unclear how well Men will stack up against his prior works, but Garland is an exciting filmmaker and storyteller who manages to challenge viewers as much as he entertains them.
