Book Of Boba Fett Is Like The Godfather, Says Fennec Shand Actress

Ming Na-Wen has said The Book of Boba Fett is similar to The Godfather, saying it’s “more like a take on gangster movies” than The Mandalorian.

The Book of Boba Fett actress Ming-Na Wen says the upcoming Star Wars series is reminiscent of The Godfather. The Boba Fett-centric show will close out 2021 by premiering on Disney+ on December 29. The show is a spinoff of The Mandalorian, which brought the iconic Star Wars bounty hunter back to live-action in its second season. A post-credits scene on the Mandalorian season 2 finale saw Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) alongside Fennec Shand (Wen) entering Jabba’s Palace, killing Bib Fortuna, and then taking his place on the notorious gangster throne of Tatooine.

Over its first two seasons, The Mandalorian was frequently compared to classic Western films such as The Good, The Bad, and the UglyThe Magnificent Seven, and Stagecoach. The show wore its western influences, as well as its allusions to samurai cinema, on its sleeves. Wen’s character Fennec Shand first appeared in the season one episode “The Gunslinger,” where she immediately established herself as one of the galaxy’s most formidable assassins and bounty hunters. That episode ended with a tease of Fennec Shand’s pairing with Boba Fett, which was built upon when the two of them were brought into the latter half of the show’s second season.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wen differentiates The Book of Boba Fett from The Mandalorian by saying the film is not a western but rather is influenced by mafia films like The Godfather. She explained that the spin-off is “more like a take on gangster movies,” before describing the bond between Shand and Fett. She said “I feel like they are bonded because both of them had near-death experiences. They’re both bounty hunters, and they do adhere to a certain level of respect and honor. He saved her, and there’s a debt to be paid, and bounty hunters honor that debt.

Wen describing the show as a gangster film rather than a western aligns with what fans know about the show so far. The show’s co-creator Jon Favreau has previously stated that the show will explore Boba Fett taking over the criminal empire left behind by Jabba. Favreau said “Jabba was clearly a very strong and imposing leader, who people were very scared of, and who seemed to rule with an iron fist. You pull somebody like that out of the ecosystem of Tatooine – and Hutt Space in general – and you have the opportunity that’s ripe in the gangster genre.”

There have been many different Star Wars stories told over the years in both live-action and animation. The criminal underground of the galaxy far, far away has been explored before in titles such as SoloThe Mandalorian, and The Clone Wars. However, The Book of Boba Fett might be the first canon project that will be entirely dedicated to that corner of the universe. There’s a lot that can be played within the criminal world of Star Wars, and Morrison has stated that there are plenty of surprises and cameos for fans to look forward to throughout The Book of Boba Fett‘s seven-episode run. With the gangster show premiering later this month, and other series like Obi-Wan KenobiAndor, and Ahsoka coming soon, it’s certainly a good time to be a Star Wars fan.
