The Matrix Awakens Easter Egg Puts First Matrix Movie In UE5

[ad_1]

A Matrix Awakens demo player recently encountered an aptly “meta” Easter Egg – one that calls back to the franchise’s original movie.

A player trying out the Unreal Engine 5 demo for The Matrix Awakens encountered an appropriately “meta” Easter Egg – one that specifically references The Matrix, the series’ very first film. The 1999 movie starring Keanu Reeves as protagonist Neo launched a genre-defining sci-fi franchise that is still ongoing, with several Matrix video games emerging from the iconic series since.

The Matrix Awakens is set to be the franchise’s next video game installment, having been officially announced at this past week’s 2021 Game Awards. Along with its official reveal, the game’s Unreal Engine 5 demo released for download – meaning eager players can get their hands on an early iteration of the game now. The game is said to task players with entering an entirely new digital frontier as Neo, featuring realistic-looking graphics and a variety of shooter opportunities. Trinity, played by Carrie-Anne Moss in the films, joins players as they venture into a new digital landscape.

Players are already sinking their teeth into The Matrix Awakens thanks to its UE5 demo, and some appear to have stumbled across some franchise Easter Eggs. A Reddit user stealthnoodle12 recently encountered a particularly “meta” Easter Egg in the downloadable demo and posted a screenshot online. At first glance, the screenshot appears to be a pretty basic – albeit, realistically detailed – graphic of a building window. However, upon further inspection, the room behind the glass features a television with one of the most recognizable scenes from The Matrix movie. The television screen appears to show the Neo vs. Morpheus Kung-Fu scene – a moment in which Laurence Fishburne’s character Morpheus mentors Neo into understanding the fluidity of space, time and capabilities in the Matrix.

Both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their roles in The Matrix Awakens, this time taking on the task of voice acting. Given the game’s source material and recently unveiled trailer, The Matrix Awakens will likely feature key elements from the film series, such as – but not limited to – high-intensity action moments, car (or other vehicle) chases, various ruminations about “what is real,” and more. That said, those interested in playing the game will need either a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S console; PC gamers or otherwise will have to wait, that is, if the game is set to arrive on other platforms at all.

The Matrix and its sci-fi-action world lends itself well to the field of video games, seeing as the film series already has so many vital elements that create great gaming experiences. With this discovery of The Matrix Awakens’ nod to the original movie, it appears the game is devoted to providing players an authentic Matrix experience. And with such detailed, clear graphics on Unreal Engine 5, The Matrix Awakens seems to be on the right track.
