Content Warning: The following article contains spoilers for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

With its second season already confirmed, The Rings of Power will continue to expand the grand world originally created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The TV show has also undoubtedly renewed interest in the legendary award-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy, which depicted iconic characters like Frodo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, and Legolas.

Legolas is among the fan-favorite members of the Fellowship of the Ring who has become the subject of numerous memes. There’s no shortage of memes that perfectly capture the Elvish Prince’s personality, relationships, and major actions in the movies.

A Red Sun Rises

While tracking the band of Uruk-hai that captured Merry and Pippin, Legolas says an iconic quote as he describes the “red sun.” He goes on to explain that it means “blood has been spilled this night,” adding even more pressure to the already-tense situation.

The meme-worthy moment has become a popular format that reflects Legolas’ unusual (often poetic) way with words. It also speaks volumes about his unique intelligence thanks to his Elvish background, which makes him privy to information that others are blissfully unaware of.

A Strong Bond

It may seem like it sometimes, but Legolas isn’t perfect. He’s a flawed character who once shows his weakness before the battle at Helm’s Deep. He confronts Aragorn about fighting when they’re almost certainly doomed to lose, but soon finds his courage and stands behind his close friend on the eve of the battle.

A humorous meme captures Legolas’ deep respect and love for Aragorn, who he is willing to follow to death if need be. The Elf’s momentary lack of bravery is a small aspect of his personality, and the fact that he manages to overcome it for the sake of his oath and friends says a lot about his character.

The Best Archer

Legolas often manages to set himself apart during the several battles in the LotR movies through his choice of weapon – a bow and arrow. He’s an incredibly talented archer who showcases jaw-dropping maneuvers more than once, like during the fight against the troll or more crucially, his strategic attack on an Oliphant.

An amusing meme underscores the fact that Legolas’ skills are inextricably linked with his character. He has proven again and again that there’s more than one way to wield a bow and arrow effectively, as the weapon can be used to take down even the largest foes.

Not The Best Timing

Before the exhilarating battle of the Hornburg, Legolas tries to convince Aragorn that their attempts are futile and they would be meeting their painful demises that night. He says all of this in Elvish so no one around them can understand their heated argument, but Aragorn’s use of the common tongue to angrily respond cause the room to fall silent.

A gut-busting meme pokes fun at the confrontation between the two of them. They have used Elvish to communicate before, and this common ground has both been good and bad for their friendship. Legolas’ mastery of the language may come in handy in some circumstances, but at that moment, it just made things worse.

Only Counts As One

The genuine rivalry between Legolas and Gimli eventually turns into an unexpectedly close friendship. They don’t lose their competitiveness, however, and will always try to beat each other by counting how many enemies they manage to kill during each new battle.

A funny meme references one instance when Legolas defeats a huge Oliphant in an awesome way. The obviously amazed but secretly impressed Gimli reminds him “that only still counts as one.” This friendly competition is a heartwarming part of Legolas’ portrayal in the films.

Side By Side

An unforgettable scene involving Legolas and Gimli happens during the Battle of the Black Gate. They think the last stand for Middle-earth could possibly mean their deaths, too, which is why Gimli remarks how he “never thought” he’s “die fighting side by side with an Elf.” Legolas’ heartfelt response is a question that sums up how far they’ve come – “what about side by side with a friend?”

A hilarious meme depicts this exchange, while also emphasizing an often-overlooked part of Legolas’ character. He’s not just a talented fighter, but an empathetic and compassionate one, too. His comforting words likely helped Gimli muster up some extra courage for the daunting battle ahead.

Elf Culture

Throughout the trilogy, Legolas is the Elf that viewers get to see the most (since he’s part of the Fellowship). It makes sense then that fans would learn a lot about the Elves simply by watching Legolas and what he’s capable of.

An entertaining meme highlights Legolas’ role as being representative of some facets of “Elf culture.” His Elvish skills are an integral part of his character, which include his sharp hearing, ability to see things from a great distance and in the dark, and his hard-to-match agility and endurance.

He Wasn’t Even There

A jolly reunion takes place when Frodo finally wakes up back in Rivendell following the nerve-wracking events in Mount Doom. Frodo greets his friends as they walk into the room, but he doesn’t hide that he has his favorites.

A sidesplitting meme points out the lack of attention Legolas receives when compared to everyone else. The Elf is more intimidating and standoffish at times, often shining during battle instead of in happier scenes. It’s not a bad thing that he never grew as close to Frodo as the others, as Legolas was forging lifelong bonds of his own.

A Slight Tingle

Gimli makes the mistake of underestimating how much liquor Legolas can consume when the Dwarf challenges him to “a drinking game.” A comedic sequence ensues, which shows Gimli being understandably inebriated in front of a tall pile of empty mugs. Legolas, on the other hand, is excited to feel “a slight tingle.”

It’s one of Legolas’ most iconic quotes and is featured in a meme that sums up one of the ways the Elf is different from other members of the Fellowship. Legolas’ already outstanding skillset is made even more extraordinary by his inhuman ability to drink an absurd amount of alcohol.

It’s Cool

The action scenes that highlight Legolas’ skills can sometimes be over the top, which can cause some viewers to rightly question how realistic those sequences are. One particular scene that caused some controversy happens during the battle at Helm’s Deep, which portrays Legolas using his shield to slide down a staircase while shooting enemies with unbelievable accuracy.

This is exactly the scene a meme references, which also emphasizes how, for some fans, this only shows how badass Legolas can be. It’s a cool moment in an intense battle, and there are several others that remind audiences precisely why Legolas is adored by so many.
