Star Wars Fans React To Learning Luke Skywalker Was Voiced By A Computer

A de-aged Luke Skywalker appears in Book of Boba Fett, but the character wasn’t voiced by Mark Hamill which surprised a lot of Star Wars fans.

Star Wars fans react to learning that young Luke Skywalker was voiced by a computer and not by Mark Hamill. The legendary Jedi returned to the space saga, this time via its Disney+ series. First appearing in The Mandalorian season 2 finale, he re-emerged in The Book of Boba Fett. But aside from bringing another actor to play the character, Hamill, apparently, also didn’t provide the voice for him.

Luke’s appearance on The Mandalorian season 2 came as a massive surprise. His arrival signaled the end of Din Djarin’s (Pedro Pascal) mission of reuniting Grogu with his kind. To achieve the cameo, Hamill was de-aged coupled with Max Lloyd-Jones serving as Luke’s stand-in. As exciting as it was to see the character at this particular point in Star Wars history, not everyone was a fan of his cameo. Not only did it take away from the fact that it marked the heartbreaking separation of Mando and Grogu, but the VFX work on Luke was also criticized.

However, that wasn’t even the worst part of it as Hamill, apparently, didn’t also provide the voice for the character on The Mandalorian. Instead, show creator Jon Favreau explained to Esquire that it was fully synthesized. With sound editor Matthew Wood having archival material of Hamill during this era from old Star Wars sources, “they were able to slice it up and feed their neural network to learn this data.” Given young Luke’s re-emergence in The Book of Boba Fett, this particular detail has been the talk of the town again, with fans having various reactions to it. The Book of Boba Fett brought back the post-Return of the Jedi version of Luke in order to catch fans up with how Baby Yoda is doing since The Mandalorian season 2 finale. According to the credits, Hamill also returned to play the role but Scott Lang was his stunt double and Graham Hamilton as the performance artist this time. The Jedi had expanded screentime during his latest small-screen outing, and it’s clear that Favreau and Lucasfilm worked hard to ensure that the CGI work on him was significantly better. The problem is, his line delivery was so emotionless and monotonous that it threw people off. While it hasn’t been confirmed whether or not The Book of Boba Fett used the same voice splicing process, many presumed that they did again.

Assuming that Luke was voiced by a computer in the ongoing Disney+ show as he was in The Mandalorian, Star Wars fans have varying opinions about Lucasfilm’s decision to not just bring Hamill back to do the voice-over instead. After all, he’s already involved in the project as per the credits. As seen in the aforementioned tweets, some question this decision, especially since the actor is also known as a prolific voice actor. Meanwhile, others appreciate that they’re pushing the technological boundaries by continuously honing this process.
