District officials said the student consumed a piece of the moldy cheese.

MESQUITE, Texas — An investigation is underway at Mesquite ISD after a student was served moldy cheese at a middle school on Thursday.

District officials confirmed the incident happened at Woolley Middle School and that the student had consumed a piece of the cheese, as well.

According to the district, the student was eating the cheese cubes when a classroom aide noticed the issue and immediately took action by taking away the cheese.

The student was taken to a nurse’s office, where the student’s parent picked them up and took them to a doctor to be checked.

The district explained that the cheese cubes, from the brand Land o’ Lakes, were individually wrapped in packets and were marked to expire in April.

“Our FNS staff are investigating the issue with the help of the manufacturer to determine why cheese would become moldy prior to the expiration date,” the district said in a statement to WFAA.

According to the district, the packaging makes it difficult to see the cheese without opening it. The district said all cheese at the campus was pulled in the meantime.

“The kitchen team followed its normal procedure of checking packaging for damage and the expiration date prior to serving,” the district said.

The district added that it is in the process of removing the cheese cubes from all campuses and will be replacing them with cheese from a different manufacturer.
